Medical Powers of Attorney

Clarify Preferences for Medical Treatment

Most of us have had informal conversations with family and friends about hypothetical medical situations. If a time ever came when a family member would have to relay your wishes to a doctor, would they really know what your wishes were? More importantly, if they did know, would those wishes be honored? By establishing a person to act as your medical power of attorney, you can be ensured your wishes are followed and your family is spared any unnecessary anxiety.

Attorney Steve Howen has put a lot of thought and effort into making the process of establishing a medical power of attorney a simple and affordable process. Our Family Lifeguard Plan will cost you $500 and only a few hours of your time. It is up to you to take the next step toward establishing a health care directive by contacting a Richardson lawyer today.

What is a medical power of attorney? What is a Living Will?

The medical power of attorney allows you to choose an individual who will communicate with the physician on your behalf if you are unable to communicate. A Living Will is a written directive in which you express your wishes concerning medical treatment. Of course, neither the Medical Power of Attorney nor the Living Will is effective if you can still communicate. But in those situations were you have lost the ability to speak for yourself, these documents make sure your desires involving surgery, intravenous feeding and end of life decisions are honored. We recognize these subjects are not pleasant to discuss with your spouse, children or other loved ones, but talking about it now and establishing a plan is a step that could save your family much anxiety in the future.

What is a durable power of attorney?

A durable power of attorney empowers someone else to act on your behalf in dealing with your financial and property affairs. Like the medical power of attorney, you can have it drafted so that it only becomes effective on your disability. A durable power of attorney can be broad or limited to one activity--like managing a person's financial affairs or selling a home. The person acts as your "agent" or "attorney-in-fact" when you are not able to, either due to incapacity or for any other reason. It may be something as simple as an individual being out of the country while his or her home is being sold. Our firm welcomes questions about this and any other type of document we offer in our Family Lifeguard plan.

Are you ready to take that step toward providing you and your loved ones with peace of mind? Contact us today to set up your consultation. We serve people throughout North Dallas, Richardson, Plano and the surrounding areas.
